Dr. Feras Batarseh

Dr. Feras A. Batarseh is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech and a faculty researcher with the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative. He is the Director of the AI Assurance and Applications (A3) Lab and the AI & Cyber for Water & Agriculture (ACWA) Lab, where his research focuses on trustworthy artificial intelligence, intelligent water systems, cyberbiosecurity, explainable AI, context and causality, and data-driven agricultural policy.

His work explores the intersection of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, water infrastructure, and smart agriculture, with applications including water security, precision agriculture, AI assurance, agricultural trade analytics, and cyber-physical system resilience. His research also addresses major challenges in modern AI systems, including explainability, trustworthiness, fairness, data bias, causality, and AI governance.

Prior to joining Virginia Tech, Dr. Batarseh served as a research assistant professor at George Mason University and directed the Turing Research Group, an applied AI research initiative. He also worked in industry and government consulting roles supporting organizations including MicroStrategy, United States Agency for International Development, and United States Department of Agriculture.

Dr. Batarseh earned his Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Computer Engineering from University of Central Florida, a graduate certificate in Project Leadership from Cornell University, and a Juris Master in Law from George Mason University. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, books, and international research contributions in AI assurance, cybersecurity, and public policy.
